Fits (Convulsions) in Children
These take many forms, from general jerking of the whole body, lasting several minutes, to brief periods of blankness, without any movement, lasting less than a second.
Treatment
Place the child in a position in which he cannot hurt himself, by falling or knocking himself. Touch or move him as little as possible while he is actually convulsing. Loosen tight clothing about his neck, chest, and waist as soon as possible. Never try to force a peg or spoon or anything else in between his tongue. (It is possible to knock out a tooth in the process, which he may inhale into his lungs). If the child vomits, turn him on his side so that the vomit runs out of his mouth and does not obstruct his breathing. Stay with the child during the fit and, above all, don’t panic. Obtain medical help immediately. If the child feels hot, remove his clothing and sponge limbs, face, and body with tepid water. Allow the moisture to evaporate from the skin. This will reduce his temperature while waiting for the doctor to arrive.
