Obesity, the Problem of the Modern Society
Obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in the modern society. In the western society, it affects around 50 percent of the adult population. The cause of obesity is simple. People eat more than they need. The excess of potential energy is laid down as fat.
Why people get fat is still some kind of mystery. There is no proof that fat people necessarily eat more than thin people. Some lucky people can even eat anything they want without getting fat.
There are a number of health problems that are associated with obesity, such as cardiovascular and kidney disease, diabetes (but of course not all overweight people are diabetic), and liver cirrhosis (may also be associated with high alcohol consumption). There are some other health problems that are less dangerous which often associated with obesity, such as flatfeet, varicose veins, hernias, osteoarthritis, and bronchial disorders.
Overweight people are encouraged to reduce weight, to improve life expectancy by reducing the possibility of getting health problems.
